Biographical Summary
William Bradford lists Richard
Britteridge as a passenger on the Mayflower; he was apparently an
adult male that was not a servant. Richard Britteridge's death is
recorded on 21 December 1620, one of the six passengers to have died
during the month of December, and the first passenger to die after the
Mayflower had sailed from Provincetown Harbor over to Plymouth
Harbor.
Nothing else is known of Richard
Britteridge. The parish registers of Crowhurst, Sussex record the
baptism of a Richard Brightridge on 31 December 1581, son of Anthony
Brightridge. As this name is extremely uncommon, this very well
could be the Mayflower passenger. An older brother, John,
was baptized there on 22 February 1579.
