Inventory of the Mayflower (1624)
|
|
After the death of Christopher Jones, the captain and quarter-owner of the Mayflower, the ship was appraised by the High Court of Admiralty. Three of the four owners requested the appraisal, and the original HCA document of their request can be seen here. The ship, in that request, is represented as being "in ruinis", meaning the appraisal was not for the purpose of selling a ship, but for the purpose of selling the ship for scrap. This is a photo-scan of the original inventory taken on the Mayflower in 1624, as found in the Public Records Office in London, in the records of the High Court of Admiralty. It has never before been published in its entirety, or displayed in its original form, though its existence has been known by historians since the early 1900s. The line-by-line transcription was made by me, after I spent a good while learning how to read the handwriting. Crown copyright: Public Record Office, London.
