Historic Recipes

  • Sea Biscuits.  These cracker-like biscuits, sometimes called hardtack, were one of the main food sources eaten during sea voyages, because they stored well for long periods of time.  The harder the cracker, the longer it avoided moisture and worm infestation.  Mayflower passenger Edward Winslow recommended to future travelers that it should be baked so hard you that you need an adz to break it up.
  • Strawberry cornmeal.  Popular treat made originally by the Wampanoag.
  • Stewed Pumpkins.  Recipe recorded by John Josselyn in his 1672 book New England Rarities Discovered.
  • Roasted or boiled turkey and turkey sauces.  The Pilgrims sent several men fowling, and they returned with enough turkeys to feed the entire colony for a week.
  • Boiled fish.  The Pilgrims brought back fish (primarily cod and bass) from the Bay for their Thanksgiving.
  • Roast Venison.  The Pilgrims and Indians shared five deer at the Thanksgiving.
